Keyword Research and
Analysis
Words
Words drive traffic on the web. Period. Not
fancy graphics - they might never be seen. Words, simple
words. People type keywords and key phrases into search boxes all day
long, hoping to find relevant results for their
searches - products and information to solve their
problems.
Keyword research in its
purest sense, for our use, is primarily for
pay
per click bidding,
yet its use and application goes far beyond
selection of terms to bid on, or to use in search
engine ranking for your site. It is essentially a
glimpse into the market. Not the surveys, not what
the marketing folks say, but what is ACTUALLY
happening on the web. What people are REALLY
looking for.
Real Internet Marketing Information - the truth!
For example, how many
people would admit to looking for the word "s-e-x"
on the web? Seriously? Well,
it's always in the top ten searched words on the web,
always has been , and probably always will be. But
how many people will tell you that in a survey, or
in a focus group, or in person? Some of what we
will find is shocking, and we'll shield you from
that , yet another benefit of our service.
Sometimes a business owner
or operator has spent so much time with his
products, they lose sight of what the customer
calls his product, or category. Keyword research
can define what the user is looking for, and in
approximately what numbers.
Numbers
It's also a numbers game. How many people are
searching for what term? Why is this useful? Well,
it's simple. If you sell what your industry or
trade calls "doodads", and the buying public at
large calls them "widgets", and you are optimized
or targetting "doodads", you won't get as much
traffic as if you optimized, or bid on the term
"widgets". Simple eh?
For example, off the top
of your head - what do people search for more,
baseball hats or baseball caps? If you sell these
items, you might want to know this! (if you are
using a pay
per click
campaign, as you should, you'd bid on both!)
Actually, as of this writing, Baseball caps was the
winner, with a score of 7,525 searches to Baseball
hats score of 3,838 searches at Overture. Nearly twice
as many! This could be very important if you sell
baseball CAPS.
Discover opportunities
In the process of doing
keyword research, you might discover that an
enormous amount of people are searching for "purple
widgets." If you sell purple widgets, shouldn't you
be optimizing or bidding for presence for the term
"purple widgets"? Perhaps even having a domain name
that says "purple widgets"? If you don't currently
sell PURPLE widgets, maybe you should consider it.
Perhaps in the course of
keyword research you might find a good number of
people searching for "widget information". Does
your site offer widget information? Maybe it
should! You could develop a reputation on the web
as THE site for widget information. People
would flock to your site to learn about and buy
your widgets. How about "widget accessories"? You
could develop a line of accessories for your now
world famous, and available widgets. But, if you
had not done the appropriate keyword research, you
would never have recognized, nor seized the
opportunity.
Professional level keyword
research will alert you to opportunities, flag you
when you may be targeting a market that is too
small to support your endeavor on the web, give you
ideas to expand your site or even your product
line, and more. And these are just the
by-products!
